Srinagar is the largest city and the summer capital of the state of
Jammu and Kashmir. It lies on the banks of the Jhelum River, and is famous for its gardens, waterfronts, and houseboats. The city is also known for traditional Kashmiri handicrafts and dry fruits.
City Infrastructure
The National Highway 1A and National Highway 1D are amongst the many highways that serve the city.
Srinagar Airport operates regular domestic flights to Leh,
Jammu,
Chandigarh, and
Delhi, and occasional international flights. When it comes to rail transport,
Srinagar is a station on the 119 kilometres long Kashmir railway that connects Baramulla to
Srinagar, Anantnag, and Qazigund. Through a newly constructed Banihal tunnel which is 11 kilometres in length, the railway track is connected to Banihal across the Pir Panjal Mountains. It is the longest rail tunnel in India. The proposal for the development of a metro system in the city is being considered.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will carry out its feasibility report. There are also facilities for cable car and boat (shikaras).

Srinagar is one of the many places that have been termed as the Venice of the East or the Kashmiri Venice. There are a number of lakes around the city that constitute the major tourist attractions in the city. These include the Dal Lake, Nigeen Lake, Wular Lake, Manasbal Lake, etc. Wular Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia. Dal Lake is primarily popular for its houseboats. The city is also home to some Mughal gardens, such as Chashma Shahi, Pari Mahal,
Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, Naseem Bagh, etc. Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Botanical Garden has been included in the tentative list for World Heritage Sites, under Mughal Gardens of
Jammu and Kashmir. Other places of interest include Sher Garhi Palace, Gulab Bhavan Shankaracharya Temple, and Kheer Bhawani Temple. There are several religious holy places in the city, including Hazratbal Shrine, Jama Masjid
Srinagar, Gurdwara Chatti Patshahi, Aali Masjid, Hari Parbat, besides other structures. As far as the educational sector is concerned,
Srinagar boasts of one of Indias premier technical institutes- the National Institute of Technology
Srinagar. Other reputed educational institutions are Government Medical College
Srinagar, University of Kashmir, Sri Pratap College, Amar Singh College, Islamia College of Science and Commerce, and few others. When it comes to sports, the city is home to the Sher-e-Kashmir Stadium, Bakshi Stadium, and a golf course names Royal Springs Golf Course.
