About
Amritsar is a city in the northwestern part of India, in Punjab. Situated 217 kilometres northwest of state capital of
Chandigarh, it is also in close proximity to Pakistan, with the Wagah Border only 28 kilometres from here. It hosts the famous Golden Temple, the spiritual and cultural centre for the Sikh religion. Attracting almost as many, or more, visitors than the Taj Mahal, it is also the most popular destination for NRIs in India.
Amritsar is also home to the Ramtirth Temple, believed to be the Ashram site of Maharishi Valmiki. The Akal Takht, the committee responsible for the upkeep of gurdwaras, is also based in this city.
Amritsar has been selected as one of the heritage cities under central governments Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY).
City infrastructure
A proposed investment of Rs 580 crore has been agreed upon by the central and Punjab governments for the
Amritsar BRTS, believed to relieve traffic congestion and improve air quality. Situated on the historic GT Road,
Amritsar provides smooth connectivity through an intensive road network. For four-laning of the
Amritsar-
Jalandhar stretch of GT Road, Rs 450 crore is being spent. The proposal of a high-speed rail line by Indian Railways, to serve
Delhi-
Amritsar via
Ambala, has also been made. The train is to run at high speeds of 160 km/hr, halving the travel time between the two cities from five hours. The project has generated interest among companies from Japan, China, the UK, and Canada. An elevated road with four lanes was linked to the National Highway to provide better access to the Golden Temple. You can get trains to
Delhi,
Kolkata,
Mumbai,
Hyderabad, and the other metros, from the
Amritsar Railway Station.
Real estate
Bypass Road and GT Road are the best locations to have a property in
Amritsar. A rise in commercial activities has boosted the real estate market here. There also are several upcoming properties on the outskirts of the city. The considerable increase in property prices here indicate growth of the real estate market in
Amritsar.
Township living of international standards has made its way to the urban housing scheme in the city. Along with villas and condominiums, serviced apartments have also been introduced by some developers in their townships. Earlier, there used to be independent houses in private colonies, but now more and more multi-storey housing and cooperative societies are coming up.
Lifestyle
The prominent tourist places in
Amritsar include Durgiana Temple, Gobindgarh Fort, Harmandir Sahib, Jallianwala Bagh, and Wagah Border. There also are numerous prestigious educational institutions in this city.
In recent times, several malls have come up, significantly improving the lifestyle of the local population. One also has easy access to quality medical services here, thanks to the well-equipped hospitals and health care centres present in the city.
