About
Mathura is a city in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Situated approximately 50 kilometres north of
Agra and 145 kilometres south-east of
Delhi, this city is the administrative centre of
Mathura District. It is one of the seven cities considered holy by Hindus, as it was the birthplace of Lord Krishna. The
Mathura Refinery is one of the biggest oil refineries of Asia.
City Infrastructure
Mathura enjoys smooth connectivity by rail to major cities of India such as New
Delhi,
Mumbai,
Kolkata,
Chennai,
Bangalore,
Hyderabad,
Indore and many others. It is served by four stations with
Mathura Junction being the biggest one.
NH 2 (
Delhi-Howrah) Highway passes through the city and links to NH 3 (to
Mumbai), a part of which is known as
Mathura Road. Other prominent arterial highways that boost the connectivity of
Mathura include NH 11, SH 33, and NH 93. The shortest way to reach
Mathura by road is via the
Yamuna Expressway. The Minister for Civil Aviation has suggested the development of a Greenfield International Airport in
Mathura and the construction for the same has already commenced near the
Yamuna Expressway. It aims to operate flights to key cities such as
Varanasi,
Ujjain,
Mumbai, and
Delhi within 5 years.
Mathura has also been selected as one of the heritage cities for HRIDAY (Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana) scheme of Government of India.
