A city and municipal corporation in the
Kannur district of Kerala,
Kannur city is situated 518 kilometres north of Thiruvananthapuram. It is famous for its pristine beaches, native performing art (Theyyam), and handloom industry. The largest city of the North Malabar region, it boasts a great strategic military significance. The city also hosts the worlds largest naval academy. The loom industries functioning in the district and the ritualistic folk arts held in the temples here have earned this place the title of land of looms and lore.
City infrastructure
Kannur is strategically placed on NH-66 between
Kozhikode and Mangaluru. This highway is soon to be turned into a four-lane one. There has also been a proposal to lay a bypass to further widen the national highway. The city enjoys smooth connectivity by several private and Kerala State Road Transport Corporation buses.
Kannur Railway Station is one of the important stations on the Southern Railway. The under-construction
Kannur International Airport at Mattanur will become the fourth international airport in Kerala on completion. This airport will feature a 4,000-metre runway (the longest in Kerala) and state-of-the-art passenger terminal, besides other premium amenities. A comprehensive network of roads will allow easy access to the airport, and a proposal for railway line has also been suggested. Kottiyoor Utsavam held in the June-July period of the Malayalam calendar, is a huge religious event that attracts thousands of pilgrims. It lasts for 27 days. The city is also well-known for a number of its temples.
