Shimla, also known as Simla, is the capital city of the northern state of Himachal Pradesh. It is one of the least populous capital cities in India, despite being the chief commercial, cultural, and educational centre of the hilly regions of the state. Shimla boasts of a number of buildings that are styled in the Tudorbethan and Neo-Gothic architectures which date back to the colonial era, besides several temples and churches.
City Infrastructure
Bus or private vehicles are the principle mode of transport here. The NH 22 connects Shimla to the nearest large city of Chandigarh. It also enjoys road connectivity to all the major towns. The Kalka Shimla Railway features in the Guinness Book of World Records for the steepest rise in altitude in a distance of 96 kilometres. In 2008, this scenic narrow gage track became part of the World Heritage Site Mountain Railways of India. The city hosts three railway stations. A development plan has also been formed to make the city a spot for health tourism.
