Behala is a neighbourhood in the south-west of Kolkata. It is divided into two Vidhan Sabha constituencies Paschim and Purba. One of the oldest residential areas of the city, Behala is also an important industrial centre, housing many factories and manufacturing units like chemicals, plastic, spray painting, metal plating, etc. The prominent localities around this area include Taratala, Parnasree Pally, Manton, Kadamtala, Silpara, Thakurpukur, Sakher Bazar, etc. It is home to illustrious personalities of the city, such as Sourav Ganguly, former Indian national captain, and Sovan Chatterjee, the present Mayor of Calcutta. The major landmarks of Behala are West Bengal State Archaeology Museum, Sabarna Sangrahashala, Behala Airport, Sonar Durgabari, Barisha Chandi Mandir, Siddheshwari Kali Temple, and others.

Connectivity
Different means of public transport are easily accessible from this area, thus, making it immensely well-connected. Several buses link this area to the other key parts of the city such as BBD Bagh, Howrah, Sealdah, Park Street, Bidhan Nagar, and Kidderpore, to name a few. Auto-rickshaws are hired by daily commuters to travel conveniently to adjoining areas like Rashnehari, Gariahat, Tollygunge, Jadavpur, etc. Behala is served by the Majherhat railway station on the Sealdah South Section of Kolkata Suburban Railway. Metro rail service has also been proposed in this area, and work is currently under progress. The Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is a 46-minute drive from here via VIP Road. Another Airport in this area is the Behala Airport, popularly referred to as Behala Flying Training Institute or Behala Flying Club.

This has emerged to be one of the most sought-after destinations amongst home-buyers in south Kolkata chiefly due to smooth connectivity and close proximity to the upcoming IT hub proposed by the state government. Many well-known developers have made their presence felt in this area, with some distinguished property projects.

A number of reputed schools are found in this area, such as National Gems Higher Secondary School, Orient Day School, Vivekananda Mission School, M.P. Birla Foundation Higher Secondary School, Barisha High School, Behala Arya Vidyamandir, Vidya Bharati School, Behala High School and many others. The schools are affiliated with different boards, and follow English/Bengali Medium. The nearby colleges include Behala College, Sarsuna College, Vivkananda College, etc. The highly esteemed Indian Institute of Management, Joka, is also in close proximity to this area.

Several prominent banks have established their branches here, such as Axis Bank, IDBI Bank, State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, and others. The State Bank of India has one of its busiest branches here.
