A property or a land parcel inherited up to four generations of male lineage is regarded as an ancestral property. According to the Hindu Succession (Amendment) Act, 2005, daughters have equal rights over an undivided ancestral property. A father who is the current owner of a family property must share ownership rights with his son, provided the share of the former is decided first after which the successive generations can subdivide the portion from their corresponding predecessor. Such properties cannot be sold without the successors’ consent and can be reclaimed by filing a suit for partition in a court.
