        Shillong Bags Smart City Tag, Number Reaches 100

        The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has selected Shillong as the 100th city to receive funding under the Centre's flagship Smart Cities Mission after evaluation of the proposal submitted by it. Earlier, nine names were added in the smart cities list in January. These cities were Biharsharif (Bihar), Diu (Daman & Diu), Erode (Tamil Nadu), Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh), Kavaratti (Lakshwadeep) and Bareilly, Moradabad & Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh). The list now has a total 99 cities to be developed as smart ones.

        Govt Approves 53 L Homes Under PMAY-U; MIG Homes Are Now Bigger

        As of July 25, the total number of affordable homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) has touched 53.74 lakh homes. The latest addition was about 2.67 lakh homes across 10 Indian states. In the latest round of meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee of the PMAY chaired by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary, Durga Shanker Mishra, Madhya Pradesh was sanctioned 59,421 homes, highest in this round.

        UP Builds Highest Number Of Units For Rural Poor Under PMAY

        While states are running way behind schedule as they chase the government’s dram of providing housing to all by 2022, Uttar Pradesh is seen making progress in its villages. India’s most populous state has topped the list in providing homes to its rural poor. The state has fixed a target of building over 10.10 lakh homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Grameen (PMAY-G). The state has already built over 7.73 lakh, the highest in the country.

        India generates about 60 million tonnes of trash every year. A proper mechanism needs to be in place to dispose what has been swept from homes and streets. Proper segregation of waste at homes is the first step in this regard. On December 12, 2017, the SC had written to all the states and union territories regarding solid waste management. The court had earlier expressed concern over the deaths due to vector-borne diseases like dengue and chikungunya and said that lack of waste management was the cause of several lives being lost across the country.
