According to the Smart Cities Mission, India will meet 10 per cent of its energy requirements through solar power generation and 80 per cent of buildings will be made energy-efficient and green. Initiatives for developing solar-based products have been conceptualised to achieve this.

Since the launch of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in 2014, the Indian government has till now successfully ensured toilets across several rural areas of the country spanning over 1 lakh villages, 450 cities and 77 districts. The government, recently, offered Open-Defecation Free status to three states viz. Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh and Kerala. In an effort to support the government’s sanitation programmes, a group of IIT Madras students have designed an environment-friendly toilet using discarded PET bottles, which would replace bricks and is believed to be a cost effective method.

Urbanisation and rising vehicular population is putting a serious load on Indian roads and have highlighted the need for an effective and smarter public transportation system. Under the Smart Cities Mission, the government is planning to bring transport solutions that will not only reduce traffic congestion but also minimise environmental impact.

To tackle the case of rising unauthorised constructions in the city, the BBMP has decided to make the records of Bengaluru real estate regarding encroachment of storm water drains public. A website was recently launched to help the public know if their home or workplace has come up on an encroached storm water drain.
