India’s richest state-owned civic authority Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) presented its annual Budget worth Rs 12,157 crore for 2018-19 on March 22. This is almost 74 per cent more than the previous year’s Budget of Rs 6,976 crore, and the highest by a civic authority in the history of Independent India. Stray menace has been on the rise in all parts of India. However, this is one problem that civic bodies in the country have absolutely failed to tackle. Estimates show over 20,000 people die of rabies in India every year. In 2015, Global Alliance for Rabies Control reported that India accounted for 35 per cent of human rabies deaths, more than any other country. According to estimates by the United Nations, about 15,000 people are bitten, usually by dogs, in India each year.

On March 14, almost all the illegal structures built over 42 plots in an area of 197 acres in Delhi’s Asola village were demolished. Illegal structures that are still standing would be brought down on March 15. Working on the direction of a Supreme Court-appointed panel, Delhi’s revenue department initiated the demolition work on Wednesday. According to media reports, the area had in total 100 illegal structures with a value of Rs 3,000 crore.

After Delhi, the illegal constructions in Gurgaon has come under the scanner of civic authorities as major drives are being conducted across the town to remove squatters and encroachments from the streets and the residential colonies. In a recent move, three enforcement teams from the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) removed illegal occupants from 11 areas in the city which includes Sadar Bazaar, Jacobpura, Rajiv Chowk, Sohna Road, Subhash Chowk, Tikri village, sectors 40, 44, 45, Silokhra and Sikanderpur. These encroachments were also causing congestion on arterial roads.
