Bio-Concrete: A Step Towards Revolutionising The Construction Business?
Concrete is a popular and commonly used construction material. One of the major disadvantages of concrete, is its low tensile strength and its need to be reinforced with suitable substances, to prevent formation of cracks. Scientists in the west have discovered some special bacteria, which when mixed with the concrete aggregates, gives a self-healing capacity to the structure. When cracks develop on a surface and are exposed to moisture, the limestone-producing bacteria could refill the gaps. Sustainability and affordability would be the biggest advantage of bio-concrete and research are still underway, to make it available for complete commercial use.
