Salt Lake City is a satellite city of Kolkata, located towards the northeast of the city. The areas development started around 1958 for accommodating the citys burgeoning population. Over the years, the area developed as a residential-cum-commercial neighbourhood. Because the area was developed on land reclaimed from saltwater lakes, it is called Salt Lake City. The areas official name is Bidhannagar, after the second chief minister of the state Bidhan Chandra Roy, who has been instrumental in the development of the area. Areas such as Lake Town, Duttabad, Dum Dum Park and Rajarhat surround Salt Lake City.
Salt Lake City is well-connected to the rest of the city through the EM Bypass, Manicktala Main Road and VIP Road or Kazi Nazrul Islam Sarani. The area is served by state owned and private buses, taxis and auto rickshaws. The Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is around 12.2 kilometres from here along the VIP Road. The Sealdah Railway Station is a drive of 8.5 kilometres from here, via the Broadway Road and Beleghata Main Road. East West Metro Route shall connect Salt Lake City to Howrah Station.
