Salt Lake City is a satellite city of Kolkata, located towards the northeast of the city. The areas development started around 1958 for accommodating the citys burgeoning population. Over the years, the area developed as a residential-cum-commercial neighbourhood. Because the area was developed on land reclaimed from saltwater lakes, it is called Salt Lake City. The areas official name is Bidhannagar, after the second chief minister of the state Bidhan Chandra Roy, who has been instrumental in the development of the area. Areas such as Lake Town, Duttabad, Dum Dum Park and Rajarhat surround Salt Lake City.

Connectivity
Salt Lake City is well-connected to the rest of the city through the EM Bypass, Manicktala Main Road and VIP Road or Kazi Nazrul Islam Sarani. The area is served by state owned and private buses, taxis and auto rickshaws. The Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is around 12.2 kilometres from here along the VIP Road. The Sealdah Railway Station is a drive of 8.5 kilometres from here, via the Broadway Road and Beleghata Main Road. East West Metro Route shall connect Salt Lake City to Howrah Station.

Real Estate in Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City is one of the well-developed neighbourhoods of the city and has mostly villas and apartments on offer. Several multi-storeyed apartments are located here, that were developed by reputed builders. The area is also characterized by government housing societies. Mostly resale apartments and villas are available here, as there are fewer lands available for fresh construction.

Social Infrastructure
Being a planned city, Salt Lake City has all basic amenities required for a quality lifestyle. Schools such as Our Lady Queen of the Missions, St Francis Xaviers School, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Salt Lake City CA School, Haryana Vidyamandir and Labanhrad Vidyapith for Girls are located here. Hospitals that are in the vicinity of the area are AMRI Hospital, Apollo Gleneagles, Columbia Asia Hospital, Ananda Lok Hospital and ILS Salt Lake City.
Numerous offices of the West Bengal Government are located here, spread over buildings such as Bikash Bhavan, Vidyut Bhavan and Pouro Bhavan. Sector V of Salt Lake City is known as the electronics complex as IT companies like Wipro, TCS, Accenture, IBM and Genpact are located here.
Banks such as Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, Canara Bank and HDFC Bank have their branches in the vicinity.
