    According to data available on the urban affairs ministry website, over 75 per cent of the total waste collected across India by municipalities goes unprocessed every day. In India, on an average, over 1.43 lakh metric tonne of garbage is generated every day. Of this, only 35,000 metric tonne is processed while the remaining 1.11 metric tonne is left in open.

    Noida Authority Would Collect Only Dry Waste From June 30

    At a time when residents and villagers are gearing up to “physically” stop the dumping of waste at the proposed Sector 123 dumping yard site in Noida, the city administration has announced it would collect only dry waste from residential sectors from June 30. This means residents will be responsible to segregate waste at source.

    BMC Plans To Reclaim Mulund Dumping Ground

    The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has finalised a Rs 558-crore deal to treat solid waste at the Mulund dumping ground through biomining and free up 60-acre space in the city. This space will be used for public amenities. It is a five-year deal during which 7,000 million-tonne dump at the site will be segregated and treated.

    DDA Identifies 7.5-Acre Silt Dumping Site In Narela

    To fasten the process of cleaning of sewers and better dumping facility of silt, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has picked up a 7.5-acre land in Narela to be used as silt dumping site. Although the area falls under the jurisdiction of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, the site will be managed by the east Delhi municipal authority.

    BMC Goes After Housing Societies Not Treating Waste

    The BMC has lodged FIRs against 18 housing societies and commercials setups over non-compliance of its order making it mandatory for bulk generators to treat waste in their own premises. It has also sent prosecution notice to another 1,317 bulk waste generators for the non-compliance. Members of the housing societies and commercial establishments against whom an FIR has been lodged are looking at a jail term of up to two years or a fine of Rs 50,000.
