After Maharashtra, Punjab Mulls Hyperloop Transport

After Maharashtra, Punjab plans to launch a hyperloop transport system. The state is studying its feasibility of connecting the strategic towns here. Punjab has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Los Angeles-based Virgin Hyperloop One to explore the pre-feasibility economic study for the futuristic transport along the Amritsar-Ludhiana-Chandigarh corridor.

Initial estimate

A futuristic transport, hyperloop carry passenger pods zip through vacuum tubes at a very high speed and Virgin Hyperloop One's estimate shows that such transportation could cut down travel time to less than 30 minutes from five hours via road. In the next six weeks, pre-feasibility study will reveal the benefit, cost and demand of this transport system. In Dhaliwal’s own words, it could be “transformative” with “tremendous economic potential”.

Talking about the project and its potential, Chief Minister Singh said, “We would like to explore a Hyperloop project through the state of Punjab, connecting with other metropolitan centres in the country. In the future, this project could link beyond Punjab, to connect to the National Capital Region,” hinting at a possibility of positively impacting the markets in other north Indian cities. Meanwhile, Haryana too is in discussions to study whether the Punjab route could be extended up to the NCR for good.
