In the times of mordernisation and infrastructural development, many roads and flyovers have been constructed. The construction of such flyovers often attracts street hawkers, anti-social elements and drug addicts to the empty space beneath the bridge. The area becomes the breeding ground for criminal activities. Expecting that the government machinery would do something about it is a naïve approach, locals are equally responsible for their own security and maintaining the beauty of their locality.

As a result of the collective efforts of the residents, Mumbai got its first-ever garden with a jogger's track and children's park. Located under the Tulpule flyover on the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road, Nanalal D Mehta garden has been built on a total budget of Rs 5 crore. Designed like the river Narmada, the architects studied the flow of the river and the rocks in the river, before constructing the 600-metre blue track in the park.

The flyover was completed and opened to the public in 2014. Soon after, the land beneath became a den for gamblers and drug addicts. With the active assistance from the police and the municipal corporation, the Matunga residents barricaded the whole stretch. The locals arranged round-the-clock security and also got the BMC sweepers clean the area.

With 300 lights dotting the park, 11 rotatable CCTV cameras are installed to ensure security in the area. The park is open from 8am to 1pm and from 4pm to 9.30pm.
