Like air, water is an indispensable part of our existence. The planet has about 70 per cent water on its surface, and the human body comprises water in the same proportion. Yet, the increasing water shortage in India and the world is presenting a gloomy picture before us. The Indian government is taking key initiatives to meet the country's water demand, but the need of the hour is to also adopt smart techniques to save water at home, for a more sustainable water conservation.

MakaanIQ suggests three ways to save water at home:

Sustainable residential design

Many real estate developers in India are building housing projects with new-age environment-friendly facilities. Opting for a home in such a contemporary residential colony, with water-conservation utilities, could be a wise decision. Some of the key features are:

  • Rainwater harvesting system: It proves to be an efficient water-management technique. Based on the principle of collecting, diverting and storing rainwater in a catchment tank, the biggest advantage of rainwater harvesting is reduced groundwater dependence for residents.
  • Water recycling: Domestic waste water from kitchen sinks, dishwashers and washing machines can be given proper treatment in grey-water treatment plants. The water sourced can be used for non-drinking functions like car washing, gardening, washing clothes, toilet flushing, etc.

 Contemporary fixtures and fittings

Follow the trend and shop for modern fixtures and fittings that are designed to better utilise water. Some of the ways for better utilisation are:

  • Water meter: Installing an efficient water meter and knowing how to read it will help keep a check on hidden water leakages. If the readings change despite non-usage of water for hours, it indicates a leak somewhere in the house.
  • Appliances: Buy eco-friendly appliances like water-efficient washing machines.
  • Fixtures: Installing water-saving shower heads, low-flushing toilets and low-flow faucet aerators in bathrooms are some smart ways for conservation of water.

Personal efforts

By making minor tweaks to your daily routine, you can prevent water wastage and significantly curtail your water bill as well. Here are a few ways:

  • Handy tips: Turn off the water taps when not in use, check the plumbing for leaks, use dishwasher and laundry washer only on full load and take shorter showers. These are some elementary steps that can help in water conservation.
  • Flush: Place plastic bottles or float booster like a brick in the toilet tank. It will significantly cut down on water wastage. This helps conserve 10 or more gallons of water per day. Also, prevent wastage by not flushing trash down the toilet.
  • Garden: Design your garden by including plants that don't require much water. Water the plants only when needed and take advantage of the weather conditions.
