If you think that kitchen gardens are only meant for big houses with a large rear-end area, think again. Setting up little farms in pots and tending to them may seem an uphill task for a novice, but it's easy to have green fingers. All your greens need is proper attention, little maintenance and adequate care to get the desired result. There are many herbs and vegetables that can be easily grown in small and large-sized pots to add a little variety to your small garden. A list of such plants that you can easily make a part of your organic farming.
Uses: Mint is one of the most refreshing and versatile herbs. It can be used in the preparation of different foods; be it salad, fish or in drinks such as the lemonade, ice tea and cocktails. It also offers medicinal benefits as is useful in curing allergies, common cold and stomach ailments.
Planting and Care: The best way to plant it is to cut a sprig from an existing mint plant or a mint seed and sow it in a pot preferably 12-16 inches wide. Spring is the ideal time for them to grow. Mint requires adequate sunlight and more water. The damp soil is necessary for mint to grow and flourish.
Uses: Chillies are a good source of Vitamin A, B and E and an excellent source of Vitamin C. They stimulate blood circulation and increase body metabolism. They also act as a detoxifier to cleanse the body and help in healing pains.
Planting and Care: Take two to three chillies, slit them and spread the seeds in a pot. The seeds will require at least a week to germinate into plants. Chillies need a decent amount of sunlight, hence keep the plant in a well-lit place. The plant should be watered two to three times a week to keep the soil damp.
Uses: Coriander is one of the extensively used herbs in India. It is used as a condiment, for decoration or garnishing. It is used in both raw and dried forms to enhance the flavour of culinary dishes. The medicinal properties of coriander or dhania are that they help cure skin inflammations, skin disorders, blood pressure, diarrhoea among others.
Planting and Care: Coriander can be propagated from the seeds which are easily available in the market. The other way is to break the seeds into two parts and then sow them. Prefer to plant it in a tray rather than a pot as the tray will give a more sowing area. The container should be placed in direct sunlight. The plant grows well in a cool temperature. It is better to use a sprayer to water the young seedlings as they may drown when the water is directly poured.
Uses: The Indian curries are incomplete without tomatoes. Not only this fruit-cum-vegetable is an important ingredient used in the gastronomic activities, it also has many medicinal qualities. These red friends are very helpful in curing various types of cancers, and is good for skin and hypertension.
Planting and Care: To grow tomatoes, choose a spot that gets ample sunlight. Take a few tomato seeds (you can scoop them from a tomato) and put them in paper cups. Fill the cups with soil and let the plant germinate. After the tomato plant grows, replant it in a bigger pot. The tomato plants need to be watered every day; sometimes twice.
Uses: Rich in Vitamin C, calcium and potassium, lemons are a great source to improve immunity. Apart from having antibacterial properties, they also help in curing skin ailments and complexion, prevent cancer and is useful to combat cancer.
Planting and Care: Take a lemon tree that is two to three years old and plant it in another pot or container. Place the plant at a place where it will receive at least 8-12 hours of sunlight every day. While planting the plant, water the tree immediately and water it almost every day. Make sure that the container has adequate drainage holes so that the excess water can be easily drained from the plant.
