Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has reportedly added another residential property to the long list of real estate assets owned by him and his family. The purchase of a 5,184-square foot property in Mumbai’s Andheri West at Rs 31 crore by the Sholay star, was made at a time when all eyes are on residential real estate as an asset class that might somehow survive the ills done to the economy by the Coronavirus pandemic.  

Even though Bachchan bought the property in December 2020, he registered it only in April 2021, a move that enabled him to take advantage of the temporary stamp duty rate reduction by the Maharashtra government. The Bollywood veteran paid 2% of the property cost (Rs 62 lakh) as stamp duty for property registration.

The unit is part of the housing project Atlantis, by Crystal Group. Located on the 27 and 28th floor of the project, the unit reportedly comes with six car parking spaces. According to listings available on Housing.com, the RERA-registered ultra-premium project, which is spread across two acres of land in Andheri west, was launched in August 2017 and would start offering possession in June 2025. It only has one building, offering merely 34 units of 5BHK configurations, starting with a carpet area of 2,383 sq ft.

That Big B decided to go with a builder brand that is not among India’s top developers, is also indicative of the fact that tier-II real estate developers, which have an impeccable record of on-time project delivery, may be becoming an obvious choice for serious homebuyers.

Mumbai-based Crystal Group has so far developed only five residential real estate projects, all in Mumbai, even though it also has a presence in the commercial and retail segments.

Big B And His Real Estate Assets

The world knows Amitabh Bachchan, counted among India’s most enduring superstars, for his acting skills, his unique voice and the panache, absolute ease and sincerity with which he delivers every line in a TV commercial. Also not hidden from the world, is the Sholay actor’s sense of asset management. This is evident from the fact that the superstar, who has a fan following even the best of the Hollywood actors could only dream of, has his assets divided equally between movable and immovable assets.

In March 2017, the 77-year-old megastar also announced his assets would be equally divided between his son Abhishek Bachchan and daughter Shweta Bachchan.  As we speak of assets, let us see how much real estate does Big B, as he is fondly known, own.

How many bungalows Amitabh Bachchan owns?

The Bachchans, Jaya and Amitabh, own five bungalows in the Juhu-Vile Parle Development Scheme (JVPD). Prateeskha is the first property the family bought in the Maximum City. This is the bungalow where the late parents of the superstar lived. Understandably so, Big B is particularly fond of this property, and spends his spare time here.

Janak is another property that the Bachchan family bought in 2004. The property, worth Rs 50 crore, is used as an office and also has a work-out arena.

The family owns another bungalow Vatsa that has been leased to Citibank. (Vatsa is the Hindi for a calf, apt for a comparatively small property generating a handsome rental income.)

The family currently lives at Jalsa, the twin-storey bungalow near JW Marriott, Juhu that has a living area of 10,125 sqft. Reportedly, the property was gifted to Big B by film director/producer Ramesh Sippy, as remuneration for his lead role in the 1982 film Satte Pe Satta. Every Sunday, Bachchan, who likes to stay in touch with the masses, makes an appearance to greet his fans here.

  • In 2013, the actor, who has many an endorsements under his belt, bought a bungalow located behind the family's primary residence Jalsa for Rs 50 crore. He co-owns this property that is spread over a 750-square yard plot and has a living area of about 8,000 sqft with Bachchan Junior.
  • The family's ancestral home is in Allahabad at 17, Clive Road, that has been converted into an educational trust. This is where his late father and renowned Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan lived in the prime of his life.

Additionally, the Kaun Banega Crorepati host owns two flats in Juhu worth Rs 40 crore, an apartment in Juhu worth Rs 1.75 crore, an apartment in France worth Rs 3 crore and a flat in Gurgaon worth Rs 1.2 crore. His wife Jaya Bachchan also owns two flats in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. In 2015, his daughter-in-law, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, bought a five-bedroom luxury flat at the Bandra-Kurla Complex for a whopping Rs 21 crore.

How many plots Amitabh Bachchan owns?

The couple has agricultural land worth Over Rs 11 crore. These land parcels are located in Bhopal, Barabanki and Lucknow. The worth of non-commercial land held by the spouses is over Rs 114 crore. These properties are spread across Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Noida, Pune and Mumbai. He also owns non-agricultural land in Ahmedabad that is worth Rs 15 lakh. He also owns a commercial building at Juhu, which is worth Rs 25 crore. Amitabh also owns commercial proprties in Mumbai, worth over Rs 50 crore.
