4 Ways To Befriend A Tough Neighbour

There used to be a time when your neighbours were like your extended family, with you through thick and thin. Asking for a favour or exchange of the stereotypical 'a cup of sugar' wasn't considered much of an issue. They used to catch up with you every day to brainstorm over a host of community issues. But not anymore. As time passed, the neighbour became the new alien.

People in big cities usually don't know their neighbours by name. And, if at all they know, the equation they share is less than amiable. But as the old saying goes, you can change our friends but not neighbours. So, why not try to share a good equation with the fellows in your neighbourhood?

MakaanIQ lists a couple of ways to break the ice with thy neighbour:

Resolve issues before they balloon

A dispute with your neighbour can end you at a police station or, worse, in the court of law. If you anticipate such a situation, it is best to prevent it with preemptive measures. For instance, if you are planning an overnight party at your house, invite your neighbour personally with an invitation card. This may save you the hassle of facing the cops for playing loud music after the 10 pm deadline.

Look beyond petty issues

You might have some avoidable tiff with your neighbour over his indifference to community activities or occasional gatherings. This kind of a behaviour could appear very offensive, but it is not non-negotiable. How about trying to communicate with him to get down to the real problem; things many a time are not as bad as they appear.

Be affable, be yourself

Exhibit a positive and outgoing demeanour and wear a gentle smile when you stumble upon your neighbour. This will break the ice between the two of you and likely lead to a fruitful relationship. Don't sound pretentious or brag, for that might lead to further misunderstandings.

Lend a helping hand

Let your neighbour know that you are there for him in the hour of need. As the Bible puts it, “far better a neighbour that is near than a brother far off". When there is crisis, your neighbour should be the first one to know. Spend some quality time with him, so that you get to know each other better. Occasional compliments never did anyone any harm!
