Delhi, Mumbai Continue Action Against Illegal Constructions
Nearly 140 commercial units in three markets in areas falling in north and south Delhi were sealed on January 19 for alleged violation of municipal norms. The action on 39 units in three markets under the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) and 103 units in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) areas was taken on the directions of a Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee.
"Twenty-one units were sealed in the Sunder Nagar Market, 48 in H-Block, DDA Market in Saket and 34 in BK Dutt Market in Rajouri Garden were sealed for misuse of property," a senior official of the SDMC said. The monitoring committee recently held a meeting and more markets are likely to face action in coming days.
Meanwhile, on the same day, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) razed illegal constructions at 14 hotels. The BMC said it had demolished illegally built portions at 14 hotels and restaurants and sealed a snack outlet in the past two days.
Also, owners of 322 hotels/restaurants were served inspection reports and asked to rectify irregularities at their establishments.
Most of these eateries are located in the suburbs of Andheri and Jogeshwari.
The civic administration has launched a drive against allegedly illegal constructions at restaurants after the December-29 fire at a pub in Kamala Mills Compound that killed 14 people.
