Most of us would not be much thrilled at the idea of relocating. But, there are times when we have to shift places because our job requires this. While we do it, let us not forget that relocation also provides us with an opportunity to set up a new home exactly as we like.

Look out for that perfect haven

If you are someone too rigid about what you eat and how you live, you must do the home hunting work on your own. Do not designate it to others who you think might know your lifestyle, unless it is a family member. At most, you can delegate this work to brokers who are professionally qualified to cater to your requirements. You must also try real estate portals that give you an opportunity to shortlist a home of your choice whether you would want to buy or lease.

Don't be in a hurry

It is important to manage relocation with as much as composure as you can. Karuna and Vikas Tyagi moved to Delhi in 2005 and soon after they landed, they settled for a nice house at an exorbitant price. “We were from Mumbai and Delhi's real estate price looked very rational. It was years later that we found out that the apartment unit next to ours was sold for almost Rs 7 lakhs cheaper. We didn't wait and that is where we went wrong,” says Karuna.

It is advisable that you take up a house on rent before you settle for your own house. It will give you ample time to explore your options and read through market trends.

Know thy neighbourhood

It may do you good if you research about the neighbourhood before settling in. This is one of the important reasons why buyers prefer ready-to-move-in homes. Much of the infrastructure is already in place and it is easier to understand the social fabric of the area. Schools, hospitals, provision stores, grocery bazaars, places of worship and connectivity are aspects you do not want to chase. One would prefer that these are as close as possible. A locality which is early on in development may not give you a very clear picture.

Embrace the change

When 19-year-old Bunty Chaddha got through the prestigious law college in Bengaluru, his Delhi-based family would constantly crib about the fate of their son, who would have to deal with a new language and a different cuisine. In another instance, 23-year-old Sanath Balasubramanian from Chennai opted for his higher education in the Delhi University and his family was concerned as to how the little fellow is going to live his life with just chhole- kulche and rajma-chawal.

Most people try to replicate their lifestyles even in the new place which may not be a good idea. It is always better to embrace the change rather than taking up the stress.  Invest your time in making your dwelling suited to your daily routine. Concentrate more on important aspects such as which doctors to consult or which schools may be best for your ward or to get your vehicle registered.

De-clutter

Moving houses is the best time to dump some of the unnecessary excesses in the right place — the trash bin. Do not carry the load of things that you haven't used for a long time. Chances are that you may not use these for a long time to come either. Defaced furniture, old vehicles, worn out clothes are some examples that we stack up for no reason. Here is a checklist that would come handy when relocating.
