'Delhi CycleWalk To Be Ready By 2024'

In a bid to make the national capital more pedestrian-friendly, Union Home Minister Amit Shah laid the foundation stone for DelhiтАЩs first green commuting corridor in south Delhi, on January 6, 2020. The project will be implemented by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) by 2024.

Also known as the Delhi CycleWalk, this corridor will be a 33-km route connecting four south Delhi localities, namely Tughlaqabad, Greater Kailash, Saket and Nehru Place. This corridor will also pass through the Jahapanah forest. The total expense of building this project is Rs 550 crore. The idea behind the project is to encourage people to use green mobility options such as cycles and battery bikes to travel to their place of work, shopping and studies.

According to the plan, the CycleWalk will be designed as a loop around the city like a ring road and would connect nearest Metro stations, bus stops, business districts, industrial areas and recreational centres. Other salient features of this corridor include solar light installations, CCTV cameras, rainwater harvesting systems, car and scooter parking, etc.

The width of the cycle track and walkway will be 2.4 metres and each track shall move from one forest to another. Several water bodies are also being planned while dry ones will be revived, to solve the waterlogging problem in sunken areas along the road.

According to DDA officials, Delhi has over 11 lakh active cyclists, who prefer to pedal to work and back on daily basis. This also includes low wage-earning working population, as well as cycling enthusiasts and students.┬а
