Ghaziabad Authority To Levy 12% Interest On Tax Defaulters
The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation has passed a proposal to levy 12 per cent interest on late payments of house, water and drainage taxes. The proposal has been cleared in a board meeting and will come into force with immediate effect.
The decision to present the proposal came after the Comptroller and Auditor General raised objections as to why the civic body was not levying penalty on late payments. Also, the Uttar Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act, 1959, also has a provision for charging interest on the default payment but the corporation has so far not implemented the clause.
The move might prompt the defaulters to clear the pending dues and the corporation will be able to get additional revenue if the proposal is passed.
Paying taxes online
Last year, Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam launched an online portal for tax payments. The platform has been enabled with a system through which payers can calculate the total payable tax for the house, water and sewer and add arrears, discounts and pay the assessed amount through net banking or e-challan. Earlier, residents had to visit the corporation office for tax payment. Now, the role of intermediaries is far less. So far only four zones have taken to online tax payment- Kavi Nagar, Mohan Nagar, Vasundhara and Vijay Nagar.Â
