Water Woes Pose Threat To Sriperumbudur Realty

If one decides to follow expert advice pertaining to real estate investments in Chennai, Sriperumbudur is certainly the place to be. In the words of Hiranandani Communities CMD Niranajan Hiranandani, Sriperumbudur is simply “the jewel in the crown” named Chennai realty.

“The Oragadam-Sriperumbudur region is also future-perfect. This means that anyone buying property in this region is taking the right decision not just in present scenario, but in future, too,” he says.

One can hardly blame him of overstating.

This area that houses the official premises of about 22 Fortune 500 companies and is the workplace for millions of employees associated with information technology, manufacturing, automobile and related services is certainly the “it” place.

Consequently, rates of property in this locality that lies 40 kilometre from the city centre towards south- west have risen nine per cent in the past six years, data available with PropTiger.com show.

In deep waters

Increasing water-related issues, however, might start raining on the parade of this realty hotspot, if authorities fail to address them in a time-bound manner.  Water to the area is supplied from the Palar River, but the increasing pressure of infrastructure is making it difficult for the authorities to meet the demand. Mushrooming illegal structures are only making the matters worse by extending additional pressure on the existent infrastructure.

As more and more people move towards this locality, the Sriperumbudur Constituency that includes areas such as Maduravoyal, Ambattur, Alandur, Sriperumbudur, Pallavaram and Tambaram is beginning to feel the heat that water scarcity might aggravate further in future. Residents are already feeling the pinch.

Media reports suggest residents living in Sriperumbudur and adjoining areas of Pallavaram, Tambaram and Alandur have been getting erratic water supply in past 10 months. Residents have taken to social media and real estate public forums, including IREF, to raise water-related issues.

The quality of water has also deteriorated drastically in the past over unregulated garbage and sewage dumping in water bodies.

Neglect on part of the authorities is evident from the fact that while the area suffers due to water shortage, no attempt has been made to replete the Sriperumbudur Lake that has run dry in the past.

Despite continued demands from the residents living in the nearby areas, the authorities have made attempt to make amends. If the Sriperumbudur Lake is restored into a reservoir to collect water during rains, the water shortage might be solved to a great extent.

Problems aplenty

Sriperumbudur is not alone in facing the water issue. Others areas in Chennai, too, are reeling under water scarcity.

“Which are the areas that have adequate water supply and do not face a shortage,” asks S Krishna, a young man, looking for a rented accommodation in the city.  The very question is quite telling of the larger issue the city of Chennai faces.

Areas severely hit by water issues in Chennai include Madipakkam, Pallikarnai, Sholinganallur, OMR, Siruseri, Kelambakam, Saidapet and T Nagar. Such has been the extent of water scarcity that residents of these areas have been relying on water tankers to meet their daily needs.

In areas such as Parrys Corner, Mannadi and Sowcarpet, the quality of water is a concern since groundwater is the source of supply. In Pallavaram, residents have complaints of receiving polluted water because of the presence of leather factories in the area.

To help Chennai realty rise to its full height, authorities will have to resolve water-related issues that loom large over its perceived success.
