Shifting Home? Know Whom To Notify About Your Change In Address
Moving from one home to the other requires you to prepare yourself for the relocation including packing, necessary paperwork and making the new property ready to move. But, while you are listing all the tasks at hand, did you make a list of people who need to know about your change in address?
An information of relocation to organisations and individuals can make the transition smooth and keep you away from the running around later. Here is a list of people whom you should be informing about your relocation.
Your employer should be the first one to know if you have shifted your home. This is especially important if you are shifting to another city altogether. Check with your employer whether they can provide you with a transfer if there is a branch in the city you are moving to or if they give you an option of working from home.
In a case where you will have to resign from your duties, inform the employer in time. This will allow you to complete your notice period and also, give the employer enough time to recruit someone in your place. Also, in either of the cases, share your new address, your employer will need to touch base with you at the end of the financial year for tax filings.
This would include your bank branch where you have your account and even a locker, your insurance service provider and even your stockbroker if you deal in shares. This would help them mail you important documents to your new address or otherwise these will be arriving at your old address and you will remain uniformed.
For those moving from rented accommodation, share with your landlord that you will be shifting. Inform them well in advance, a month generally, for them to look for another tenant. The notification time would be mentioned in your rent agreement, do take a look. While you communicate verbally, do give a written information, too. Make sure you mention the date of moving out and also, your new address. You can also use this document to officially ask for the security deposit you would have submitted during the time of renting the property.
Do inform the postal services about your change in address. Tell them about your current address and the new address. How will this be helpful? In case you have letters that come to your current address once you are gone, the postal service at the time of return will be able to redirect the letter to your new address.
Check with your nearest post office for the procedure.
All your subscriptions including newspaper, milk vendor, magazines, telephone, electricity and even water will all be supplied and billed in your name if the service provider is not informed in advance about the change of address. While the static utilities including milk vendor, electricity and water should be informed about the date from which you should be billed, the other utilities including magazines, newspaper, telephone (in case of same city) can be shifted to your new address. Inform the vendors in advance and the services shall be shifted. It would help you not to apply for new subscriptions.
A change in address, especially if permanent, should be informed to government services. Get the information changed in your Aadhaar Card, Election Card, PAN Card, car registration department and even driver's license. Address should be changed as these cards are used as a proof at different times including taking a home loan, change of address in bank, shifting of certain utilities.
If you have children studying in school, their institution need to be informed about their move. Check with the school if they have a branch nearby to the area you are moving to. In case you are enrolling your children into a new school, you will need a school leaving certificate or migration from their current school for their admission in the new place.
