A Metro Or A Small Town? This Guide Will Help You Take Your Pick

Life in metro cities is fast-paced and quite obviously, the availability of good infrastructural facilities is what attracts people in large numbers, towards urban city life. Ironically, for many big-city dwellers, home ownership is still a distant dream and the high cost of living in metros, have driven them to smaller towns. Moreover, many Tier-II cities like Surat, Pune, Coimbatore and Jaipur, are emerging as business locations owing to rapid economic growth.

MakaaniQ brings you insights on the pros and cons of living in a small town and in big metro cities:

Pros of small towns over big cities

  • Proximity: Sprawling over small areas, everything is close by in small towns. Facilities such as medical clinics, schools, markets, etc., are all situated within a kilometre's distance. Even workplaces are located within seven kilometres. So, significant savings are made on transportation costs. Urban life is rather challenging with the higher cost of living and lack of spare time for pursuing other dreams. It is also synonymous with long hours of commuting.
  • Serene environs: The setting of small town area is enchanting. With lesser population and abundant greenery, residents are not likely to experience the hue and cry of busy city life. Also, open spaces and playgrounds are an added advantage for children and senior citizens; whereas, urbanites struggle everyday with traffic woes, vehicular pollution and lack of parking spaces.
  • Security: Compared to popular metropolises, smaller towns have low crime rates and are much safer for families. The neighbourhood is close-knit and allows better bonding with neighbours. People in small towns are more connected to their roots and you are more likely to find joint families, which has been replaced by single dwellers or nuclear families in metro cities.
  • Affordable living: Rents and prices of properties in smaller cities, are lower vis-à-vis the skyrocketing apartment prices of cities. Savings on one's expenditure is guaranteed since everything, from groceries and vegetables, to school-fees and even petrol, are low-priced.

Pros of big cities over small towns

  • Urban transportation: Unlike small towns, most mega-cities have wider and well-constructed roads with access to better public transportation facilities, including a higher number of private vehicles. Buses, taxis and metro rail services in the metropolitan areas, offer the convenience of commuting to your desired destinations.
  • World-class living: While branded outlets like McDonalds and Starbucks are rare in smaller towns, finding ample entertainment options in big cities, is not difficult as there would be countless options of pubs, theatres, restaurants, shopping malls, museums, art galleries, etc., just next to your neighbourhood. They could be expensive but you may not find these in small towns. Proper sewerage system, water supply and emergency health services, are also easily accessible.
  • More opportunities: While people in small towns possess immense talent, limited opportunities prove to be a roadblock in their success. The possibility of pursuing higher education or a profession in a metropolis, is much easier with several corporate offices as well as technical and management institutes mushrooming everywhere. City dwellers have better access to specialty clinics and contemporary healthcare services.
  • Cosmopolitan culture: An urban setting includes a mix of people from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. Chances of work-life balance and finding people with common interests, are better. People living in urban areas are also exposed to advanced technologies, which is missing in smaller communities.
