An ancient city in the southwestern part of Uttarakhand,
Haridwar is regarded as one of the seven holiest places to Hindus. It is the headquarters and the largest city in its district. The River Ganga, after flowing from its source at Gaumukh, enters the Indo-Gangetic plains of North India for the first time in
Haridwar. The city is fast developing as a significant industrial township.
City infrastructure
National Highway-58 passes through
Haridwar, connecting it to
Ghaziabad,
Meerut, Muzzafarnagar,
Roorkee, and Badrinath, and National Highway-74, which originates from
Haridwar connects it to Kashipur,
Bareilly and other prime locations. The city is famous for hosting the Ardh Kumbh every six years. Mini canals, trek tracks, bridges and drinking water facilities are revamped as part of preparations for this gala event.

The city boasts several places of interest, the most prominent ones being the Panch Tirth or the Five Pilgrimages within
Haridwar Gangadwar, Kushawart, Bilwa Tirtha, and Neel Parvat. The other tourist attractions include Har Ki Paidi, the Chandi Devi temple, Mansa Devi temple, Maya Devi temple, Piran Kaliyar, Neel Dhara Pakshi Vihar, Dudhadhari Barfani temple, Sureshvari Devi temple, Pawan Dham, Bharat Mata Mandir, Shantikunj, Sapta Rishi Ashram and Sapta Sarovar, among others. The key shopping destinations where tourists usually flock to are Bara Bazaar, Moti Bazaar, Upper Road, Ranipur Mor, and
Jwalapur. The biggest and first mall of Uttarakhand, the Pentagon Mall, came up near the SIDCUL compound in
Haridwar, paving the way for more malls in the city.
