Velachery became a pivotal area in Chennai after the IT boom that happened in the last decade. It acts as a point connecting localities including Guindy and Adambakam. It is a residential area that connects the old and new Chennai perfectly and plays a major role in the citys development.

Connectivity
Velachery is rapidly developing to become the residential as well as the commercial center given its geographical positioning and connectivity across Chennai. Velacheri Main Road connects Mount road Road to Guindy. The Tharamani Link Road that leads Velachery through Tharamani, connects to OMR at SRP tools, a popular junction. Velachery station lies on MRTS line, it is in fact the last station of MRTS line that originates from beach, connects major localities in the city including Mylapore, Thiruvanmyur, and Tharamani. The Velacheri Vijaynagar bus depot is one of the major bus depots.

Real-estate
Like most of the recently developed or developing areas, property and rental cost in Velachery is also highly dependent on the IT boom and its increasing connectivity to major localities of the city. There is hardly any place left for independent houses however a lot of apartments and gated communities by developers including Bharathi property developers, AGS group are being planned and executed. The average rates for flats are estimated to be Rs 6,500-7,000 per sq ft almost everywhere in Velachery. A number of IT professionals are buying property here for investment purpose because of the steady increase in the property value.

Social infrastructure:
Velachery boasts of a well-developed social infrastructure. The Acquatic Complex was one of the venues for Asian games in 1995. It has colleges including Gurunanak College on Velachery Main Road, Jerusalem College of Engineering near Pallikaranai, and Balaji Dental College. Phoenix Marketcity on Velachery Main Road is citys largest mall.
