Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, is an 11th century city founded by Raja Bhoj. The present city was, however, established by an Afghan soldier, Dost Mohammed (1707-1740). The city is known as the City of Lakes for its beautiful natural and manmade lakes. The Upper Lake is not only the lifeline of Bhopal, but is also considered the largest city-based lake in the country, spread over 35 sq km, with a shoreline of over 52 km and catchment area of 362 sq km.

Several National Highways pass through the city, including the National Highways 86 and 12. The State Highway 17 links Bhopal with Indore. Bus transport is available till Jaipur, Nagpur, Shirdi, Akola, Gwalior, Ujjain, Indore, Jodhpur, Ahmedabad, Kota, Vadodara, Nashik, Surat, Amravati and Pune. The Raja Bhoj International Airport can be reached through Bairagarh and Panchvati and the Gandhi Nagar Road. A four-lane VIP Road has been linked with the airport.

Key localities in Bhopal are Hoshangabad Road, Kolar Road, Arera Colony, Bairagarh and Malviya Nagar. The Bhopal real estate has seen healthy growth over the past few years, especially in the outskirts like Jatkhedi. The Mandideep Infrastructural Cluster has also witnessed rapid residential growth owing to industrial progress in the area. Rates of property in Bhopal are still comparatively lower than those in Delhi or other metro cities, and this is one factor spurring realty growth in the city. Demographics
Bhopal district occupies fourth highest population in the state of Madhya Pradesh. According to the 2011 census, Literacy Rate of Bhopal district is 80.4 per cent and it occupies third position in the state. The female literacy rate of the district is 74.9 per cent. Density-wise, the rank of the district is first in the state. Bhopal has a sex-ratio of 911 women per 100 men.
