Ambala is located on the states border with Punjab and lies in close proximity to the state capital of
Chandigarh. It is also known as a Twin city, as it, politically, has two sub-areas
Ambala Cantonment and
Ambala City approximately three kilometres apart. The cantonment area hosts a large presence of the Indian Army and Indian Air Force. The Ganges river network is separated from the Indus river network by
Ambala, which is surrounded by two rivers the Ghaggar and the Tangri to the north and south, respectively. The citys cloth market, its prime charm, attracts shoppers from surrounding areas. With a dense cluster of 900-1,000 wholesale shops, this market boasts a wide range of cloth items, including handloom, silk and sarees, and all kinds of dress material. It is also known as a city of scientific instruments, and is a hub for products like glass apparatus, microscopes, laboratory equipment, etc.
City infrastructure
Being a business city,
Ambala boasts a well-developed social and civic infrastructure. It hosts several schools and colleges, besides a number of vocational/job-oriented institutes. NH-1, popularly known as GT Road, passes through this city and connects it to
Delhi and
Amritsar. It is linked to
Chandigarh and
Shimla via NH-22.
Ambala also is an important railway junction, and features among the top-100 booking stations of India.

Lifestyle
When it comes to entertainment, there are a host of movie halls, such as Fun Cinemas, Minerva Complex, Capital Cinema and Nigar Cinema Hall. The cloth market here, the largest trading one in the sub-continent, is an immensely popular part of the city. Gurudwara Manji Sahib is also situated here.
