It lies on the banks of the river Noyyal and is surrounded by the Western Ghats. The city is part of the Southern Railways Salem Division. The Coimbatore Junction is the biggest railway station here. Three monorail route covering areas like Gandhipuram, City Railway Station, Podanur, Ukkadam, Race Course, Trichy Road and Townhall were proposed in 2012.
The city has six important arterial roads and three National Highways. The NH 209, NH 67, and NH 47 pass through the city. The Coimbatore Bypass consists of multiple bypasses linking multiple state and national highways passing through or originating from the city. A Ring Road was also built along with an extension from Peelamedu till Mettupalayam. Rail overbriges are being built in the city while there is a BRTS and intra and intercity bus network as well.
Upcoming projects in Coimbatore include construction of the Gandhipuram Flyover, the Solar City Project and the airport expansion project.

The Coimbatore Municipal Corporation governs the city. There are five administrative zones of the city and each has 20 wards each. A Corporation Commissioner maintains sewage, water supply and roads. The District Collector administers the city along with the Coimbatore City Police. There are town and village panchayats outside the corporation limits. The city has 10 members in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and one representative in Parliament.
Industry and employment
The textile industry changed the picture of the city in the early 19th century and it is ranked today as the best emerging city in the country. Coimbatore has a diverse and thriving economy. Major sectors in the city include textiles and cotton production as mentioned above. South Indian Textiles Research Association and the Southern Regional station of the Central Institute of Cotton Research are located here. Coimbatore is also called the Pump City, as it supplies a whopping 2/3rd of pumps and motors in the country. The city is a major manufacturing, healthcare and information technology hub. Education is also a thriving sector in this city, while it is one of the biggest exporters of wet grinders, jewellery, automobile components and poultry. The city has dedicated industrial zones and Special Economic Zones (SEZs) such as Tidel Park Coimbatore and the Coimbatore Hi-Tech Infrastructure.
